The Fragile Nature of Natural Hair
Natural hair, characterized by its coil-like texture and delicate structure, requires gentle and specific care to thrive. Compared to other hair types, natural hair tends to be drier due to the curl pattern, which makes it challenging for natural oils to travel down the hair shaft. As a result, it is more prone to breakage, frizz, and damage caused by external factors such as harsh weather, pollution, and styling practices.
Traditional Hair Care Products and Their Drawbacks
Traditional hair care products often contain synthetic ingredients, harsh chemicals, and artificial fragrances that can be detrimental to the health of both the hair and the scalp. Ingredients like sulfates, parabens, and phthalates strip the hair of its natural oils, leaving it dry and prone to breakage. These chemicals can also irritate the sensitive scalp of children, leading to discomfort and even allergic reactions.
The Benefits of Plant-Based Hair Care Solutions
Gentle and Nourishing: Plant-based hair care solutions are formulated with natural ingredients derived from plants, herbs, and botanical extracts. These products are free from harmful chemicals and harsh additives, ensuring a gentle and nurturing experience for children's sensitive scalps. Natural oils, such as coconut, jojoba, and shea butter, provide deep hydration and moisture, promoting hair strength and growth.
Scalp Health: The scalp is the foundation of healthy hair, and plant-based products often incorporate ingredients like aloe vera, tea tree oil, and chamomile, known for their soothing and antibacterial properties. These ingredients help maintain a balanced scalp, reducing dandruff, itchiness, and inflammation.
Protection and Growth: Many plant-based hair care solutions include natural sunscreens and antioxidants that shield the hair and scalp from harmful UV rays and environmental damage. These products also enhance blood circulation in the scalp, stimulating hair follicles and promoting healthy hair growth.
Chemical-Free Formulations: By choosing plant-based alternatives, parents can rest assured that their children are not exposed to harmful chemicals that can have long-term health effects. Plant-based products are often cruelty-free, environmentally friendly, and biodegradable, making them a responsible choice for conscious consumers.
Versatile Styling Options: Plant-based hair care solutions offer a wide range of styling options for natural hair. They help define and enhance curls, minimize frizz, and provide lightweight hold without stiffness or residue. These products also facilitate detangling, reducing hair breakage during combing or styling.
Promoting Self-Love and Cultural Identity
Hair is more than just an aesthetic attribute; it plays a significant role in shaping a child's self-esteem and cultural identity. By embracing and caring for natural hair from an early age, children develop a sense of pride and appreciation for their heritage. Plant-based hair care solutions contribute to this positive mindset by nurturing and celebrating the unique beauty of natural hair, fostering self-love, and promoting a healthy body image.
Conclusion
The importance of plant-based hair care solutions for children with natural hair cannot be overstated. By choosing gentle, nourishing, and chemical-free products, parents can ensure the well-being of their children's hair and scalp.

Are you having a hard time figuring out what is hair porosity is and its importance for caring for Natural Hair? Overwhelmed with trying a bunch of products, only for them not to work the way you need it to?
Knowing about hair porosity helps us to use the right product for our natural hair. Once you know your hair porosity, you will better understand how your hair responds to certain natural hair products.
WHAT IS HAIR POROSITY?
Hair porosity is how hair absorbs and retains moisture. There are three levels of hair porosity which include: low, medium or high. The cuticles on your hair, which is the outer shell, look like shingles on the side of a roof. Cuticles are like doors that open and close to absorb moisture and seal it in. They react differently when they encounter heat or cold water. Each level of hair porosity responds differently, and knowing what each one means and knowing your porosity type is the first step.
How to test Hair Porosity?
Finding out your hair porosity is easy. Try one of these three ways:
bumps or roughness, it represents high porosity hair while the smooth texture of hair shows low hair porosity.
Knowing your hair porosity is different from knowing your hair type (1A-4C). Porosity and hair type differ for everyone, for example, your hair type can be 4C and low porosity or high porosity.
TYPES OF HAIR POROSITY
Low Porosity Hair:
Low porosity hair has tightly packed hair cuticles that make it difficult to deeply penetrate moisture into the hair shaft. This type of hair can’t absorb water or any product and thus remains dehydrated and dull.
Low hair porosity doesn’t allow the hair to absorb water or any other product so the moisture or product will sit on top of the hair, and won’t dry quickly. Low porosity makes hair dry and dull because moisture can’t penetrate cuticles.
High Porosity Hair:
High porosity hair requires special nourishment. This type of hair has gaps and openings in the cuticle that can’t hold hydration. High porosity hair becomes dry right after the hair is washed. High Porosity hair can easily be damaged due to lack of care, or excessive use of heat styling.
High porosity hair can absorb water but cannot hold it because it is porous and that makes the hair dry, frizzy, and brittle. As a result, split ends can occur.
HOW TO CARE FOR LOW POROSITY HAIR
If your hair has low porosity then skip the heavy products like butters, creams, and thick oils. Heavy ingredients like Coconut Oil, Castor oil, and Shea Butter. These heavy ingredients can seal the cuticles and prevent moisture from penetrating the hair shaft. Low porosity hair requires lightweight products that can easily go deeper into the hair. Always choose water-based hair care products, clarifying shampoo, and include a natural humectant like Aloe Vera.
STEAM TREATMENTS
Steam treatments are great for low porosity hair as it will lift the cuticles and allow products and moisture to penetrate. After using the Jill & Jackfruit Hydrating Shampoo, which gives the right amount of clarifying without stripping hair of normal oils, use a moisturizing conditioner like the Jill & Jackfruit Moisturizing Conditioner with your steam treatments. Our conditioner is loaded with vitamins and moisturizing ingredients like Guava, Sea Moss, Aloe Vera Juice, Avocado Oil and of course Jackfruit (excellent for dry and brittle hair)!
SEAL WITH MOISTURE
Adding a layer of moisture after shampoo and conditioning the hair is the best way to seal in moisture. Try our Sea Moss & Papaya Leave-In Hair Yogurt that’s formulated to give strands intense moisture once applied.
Low Porosity Hair Should:
HOW TO CARE FOR HIGH POROSITY HAIR
For high porosity hair, including products that can help to protect the cuticle and seal in the moisture. Oil-based products like coconut oil, jojoba oil, or avocado are best for high-porosity hair. Try our Mango, Cocoa, & Murumuru Butter Hair Milk that’s formulated to give intense moisture and soften hair instantly. You can also go for protein treatment for nourishment and avoid breakage. Sulfates are the enemy of high porosity hair as it wipes out all the natural moisture and sebum from the scalp and makes hair strands brittle. Choose a shampoo that is sulfate and paraben free like our Jill & Jackfruit Hydrating Shampoo.
High Porosity Hair Should:
At LushUs Kids you’ll find products that can work like magic for afro-textured hair and manage the hair porosity.

Whether you watched the 2022 Oscars last month or not, you probably have an opinion about Will Smith’s slap “heard round the world”. But instead of focusing on the moments after Chris Rock chose to make Jada Smith’s baldness the butt of his distasteful joke, let’s make this an opportunity to have healthy, positive conversations about hair loss.
Alopecia is an autoimmune disease that progresses when the body attacks its own hair follicles. This causes unpredictable hair loss anywhere on the body. Oftentimes, when someone has a few bald patches, hair could regrow without treatment, but it also could be permanent. People experience this at various ages but the majority of people see it develop during childhood or as a teenager. “When the hair regrows, it may never fall out again. It’s also possible to have unpredictable cycles of hair loss and regrowth for years.”1 Children with parents or close relatives with alopecia are at a greater risk of having alopecia themselves.
You or your child’s risk of developing alopecia may also be affected by your race. “In a large study, researchers found that Black and Hispanic nurses were more likely than non-Hispanic white nurses to develop this disease.” Alopecia disproportionally affects people with Black and Hispanic backgrounds.
Hair loss is a sensitive subject for well… pretty much everyone! If you haven’t experienced hair loss yourself, you definitely know someone who has. You may not even know that your coworker is always around 10 minutes late because she’s trying to feel confident in her hair before she comes in. There’s so much negativity around losing hair, so people of all ages, races, and genders try to either cover up their bald spots or solve hair loss in unhealthy ways.
Here are some real ways to keep you and your child’s hair healthy, and prevent hair loss or any other damage to that beautiful head of hair:
Stay away from harsh treatments and pay attention to what is in the products you put in your hair. Skylar J’s LushUs Kids provides natural hair care products that treat damaged hair and scalp conditions like scalp psoriasis and eczema. Use the LushUs Kids line to wash and treat your child’s hair regularly.
Too much tension on the scalp can cause very preventable hair loss and damage. Try to avoid keeping hair up for too long, and please don’t tighten until your edges scream. They need a break every once in a while too.
Stress is another major cause of hair loss. So take that break, watch that show you’ve been meaning to binge on Netflix, and chill until you’ve had your fill. Your hair will thank you!
